The great American data centre divide

Rural America is blocking the data centre buildout the White House wants.

Communities across US farmland and small towns oppose AI infrastructure projects planned by the federal government. Local opposition is halting or delaying facility siting, forcing planners to negotiate or abandon locations.

Oliver's take: Datacentres are heavy infrastructure masquerading as software. Put a 500MW GPU farm in a county with 8,000 residents and the county wins by default. Federal planning docs assume compliance that doesn't materialize.
