OpenAI Reportedly Plots a Bold Hardware Leap with Qualcomm: An AI-First Smartphone Built to Shatter App Store Limits

OpenAI is building a smartphone designed around AI agents instead of apps.

Supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports OpenAI is in early-stage development of a device built with Qualcomm, centering on agentic AI rather than traditional app distribution. The phone would bypass the app store paradigm entirely, running AI agents natively to handle tasks without discrete software packages.

Oliver's take: OpenAI learned what Apple learned 15 years ago: the real margin is in the operating system, not the silicon. A phone without an app store is just a GPU with a screen. But it's their GPU, their screen, their moat.
