The autonomous agent paradigm: Meta’s Manus acquisition, MCP integration, and the disruption of SaaS

Meta's Manus acquisition signals a structural shift from conversational AI to autonomous execution as the next SaaS disruption vector.

Meta acquired Manus, a Singapore-based agent startup, and is integrating its capabilities via Model Context Protocol (MCP) to move beyond query-response systems into multi-step, independent task completion. Agentic systems that complete workflows autonomously replace the conversational interface layer that defined the first wave of generative AI deployment.

Oliver's take: If agents are the next architecture, then the companies that own the conversational layer just became prey. Meta bought a capability tax. The real tax is that every SaaS vendor now has to choose between becoming a plugin or becoming the agent itself. Most will become plugins.
